Purpose
Small fishing boats often head out without the navigation safety gear larger vessels take for granted, leaving crews exposed to collisions and to losing their way back to shore. A thesis team wanted to close that gap affordably — proving safe navigation doesn't have to be expensive to be reliable.
Description
We built a compact onboard device that speaks the same vessel-identification standard commercial ships use, then extended it well past passive tracking. It warns the crew when another boat is on a collision course and guides the vessel back to its destination, turning a system that normally just reports positions into an active navigation aid. It's a focused embedded build that takes a marine safety standard and makes it genuinely useful for the boats that need it most.
